General Interests

When I can find the time, I love reading science fiction. Amongst my favourite authors are Isaac Asimov (The Foundation series), Arthur C. Clarke (Songs of distant Earth) and Larry Niven. When I'm not reading SF, I usually read Terry Pratchett, although one of the best trilogies (of five, though) I've read was the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

Apart from reading, I also enjoy playing games. Usually, I prefer 'quests' (Sierra's Space Quest series) and 'action-puzzle' (Eidos' Tomb Raider) games. My pet hate has to be strategy games like Red Alert, because the computer always cheats (also, these games are for people with poor reflexes ;).

I have relatively varied taste when it comes to music, but I do prefer bands like Depeche Mode, Nine-Inch Nails, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Alphaville, Yazoo, and A-ha. Generally I prefer '80s music. Lately I've taken up listening to Cyndi Lauper and Madonna (especially her ballads). I also enjoy Sprinkbok Nude Girls, Battery-9, U2, Metallica, Cranberries and Souxies and the Banshees. The best place in town to hear good music these days is Zeplin's.

I totally despise Rap, Jazz, Blues, Country, Techno, and most Afrikaans music (e.g. Karen Zoid).

True to my reading habits, I prefer a good Sci-Fi movie (they are extremely rare), but I appreciate almost any good movie (Update: Lately, though, I've had to become a bit more picky. There's really a flood of terrible movies this year). The movies that I rate the best of all time include: The Crow, The Professional, The fifth element, Dark City, The Matrix, American Beauty, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Contact. I also like animated movies, my current personal favourite being Ghost in the Shell. Other anime favourites include Neon Genesis Evangelion and Trigun.
To the darker side, I did enjoy Seven, Natural Born Killers, Pulp Fiction and A Clockwork Orange. It's just that people sometimes look at you strangely if you mention these...
(I enjoy debating these social/moral issues, as well as what I think is generally wrong with society/the universe as we know it. Feel free to mail me.)

Worst movies of all time: Independance day, Mission Impossible II, Spiderman, Lord of the Rings (let the flame wars begin), Pearl Harbour, and any other movie laden with American patriotism, which are far too numerous to name here. I can not improve on the following definition of patriotism:
In Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last resort of the scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to submit that it is the first.
-- Ambrose Bierce, "The Devil's Dictionary"

Last but not least, I have an undying devotion to computer graphics. I casually hack at some 3D code that I've written over the years, but it's not something anyone else would be impressed with. I also like playing with POV-ray (an excellent free ray-tracer, for the uninitiated) and various other graphics packages. Other hobbies include ice-skating and ballroom dancing.
