Fritz Solms, PhD student in the SSFM research group at the department, will be presenting a public lecture on 'Architecture from First Principles' at the Johannesburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE) on 17 August 2010.

This JCSE lecture explores the commonalities of systems, organizational and buildings architecture. The presentation discusses architectural requirements, as well as designing an architecture using architectural patterns, strategies and reference architectures. The lecture looks at architecture across levels of granularity. A core responsibility of an architect is to be able to assess and validate existing architectures. The lecture concludes with ways of assessing an architecture.

Dr Fritz Solms is the CEO of Solms Training, Consulting and Development. His main focus is on architecture design and assessment, technology neutral process design and model-driven development. He has published numerous papers and participates in a NRF/THRIP research collaboration on model-driven development between the Computer Science department at the University of Pretoria and Solms Training and Consulting. Moreover, Fritz is also a member of our SSFM research group on software science and formal methods.
