PumaScope 2012: How you can help the community

Posted by Dr Fritz Solms on 17 May 2012, 12:01

The project has reached thousands of school children and rural communities and has made a valuable contribution to the lives of those communities and schools. University students volunteer to take part in the project every year and normally the response is overwhelming with interest in being part of the project. In terms of the popularity of the project, 2012 will be no different! Students who want to participate in the project, started inquiring early in the year already, mainly due to word-of-mouth advertising by students who have participated in the project before.

Please find attached a short CV you need to complete and send back to Prof Venter at hventer[at]cs.up.ac.za (please rename the file with your OWN surname and initials, e.g. MalefeJohn_PumaScope_CV.doc). Please send your application form BEFFORE Thursday 24 May 2012.

PumaScope 2012 will run from 25 June to 6 July. However, we will depart on Sunday 24 June to our respective destinations in Mpumalanga. We will also have two training sessions, which is compulsory to attend if you are selestec. The sessions are on Thursday 21 June from 12:00 to 17:00 and Friday 22 June from 8:00-17:00.

During the training sessions, you will be trained on exactly what to do with the school children and community members during the said time. We will also give you all the logistics there, i.e. who will go to which school, how to navigate your way there, where you will stay (we book the accommodation for you), and all other logistics.

Space is limited; we can only accomodate 10 people on the project. Therefore, we will have short interviews with everyone on Thursday 24 May, between 10:30 and 13:30 - I will schedule a specific appointment time with you on receipt of your application form.
