Completed an MSc in mathematical statistics at Pretoria University in 1970, an MSc in operations research at UNISA in 1972 and a PhD in operations research in 1975 at Lancaster, UK. Prior to joining the Department as a senior lecturer in 1978, worked for brief periods as a lecturer at UNISA, as a research fellow at Wits and managed a consultancy company specializing in urban planning simulation. Appointed as full professor in 1988 and served as head of department between 1998 and 2002. Editor of the South African Computer Journal (SACJ) since 1989. Academic ideals are to combine theory and practice in ways that impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of the software process.
